Help with my avatar!

I want to put a picture as my avatar. I have photobucket (although I'm very new to the service) I was able to get the picture in my signature, but not my avatar. Also I'm having issues with size, (usually too big isn't bad, LOL, but I can't figure out how to get the size right in my siggy. Could someone either help me or direct me to a previous thread where this was addressed (I'm sure this question gets asked a lot) Thanks for your help!

I use a photo editing software for my siggy pics and my avatars -> IrfanView its completely free. When you open it up you can resize pictures to the specific height & Width that I need and then I upload that into photobucket and link over here.

Thank you so much Catherine! I used your idea and I think I got it. Now I just have to play around a bit and do some editing, but I got the pictures! Thank you so much, again!
